On December 27, 2016, at approximately 4:50PM, Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputies were dispatched to Helen Wilcox School located at 5737 Autrey Lane in Oroville regarding a subject who had possibly been struck by a vehicle during a sale of a vehicle. Deputies arrived and located a male and female victim, both with minor to moderate injuries.
During the investigation, deputies were able to determine that the victims had located a vehicle that was for sale on a social media website and had arranged to meet with the sellers of the vehicle at Helen Wilcox School. The victims stated that they met with sellers of the vehicle who were later identified as Paul Chirita, age 19, and Adriana Pavich, age 19, both of Oroville. During the meeting the female victim was physically assaulted by Chirita and Chirita began searching the victim’s pockets (possibly for the money that was going to be used to purchase the vehicle). The victim’s husband then confronted the subjects and both suspects attempted to flee in the vehicle. The victim’s husband attempted to stop the suspects by jumping on the hood of the car however was thrown from the vehicle when the vehicle rapidly swerved. Both suspects fled the area.
The suspect vehicle was later located and a traffic stop was conducted by Oroville Police Department after a BOLO was broadcast by the Sheriff’s Office. BCSO deputies responded to the scene of the traffic stop and subsequently interviewed and arrested both Chirita and Pavich. Pavich was booked into the Butte County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted robbery with a total bail of $60,000.00. Chirita was also booked for assault with a deadly weapon and attempted robbery as well as outstanding arrest warrants. The total bail for Chirita was $70,000.00.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people to use caution when purchasing items off the internet from individuals. Although this is a very common method of purchasing items, there are some people that will take advantage of the scenario. When making purchases from the internet it is best to meet in a public place where there are a lot of people present to minimize the risk of thefts and assaults.
