Adopt a Highway Program

What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program?

The Adopt-a-Highway Program allows organizations to help keep Butte County's roads (not just highways) clean and safe. Become a sponsor today!

How to become a sponsor:

  • Request an application packet which should include the following:
  • Read all material. Complete the Adopt-a-Highway Application, and return a minimum of two (2) weeks prior to the initial cleanup event to Butte County Public Works, Attention: Nick Henderson at 7 County Center Drive, Oroville, CA 95965. Applications are approved for two year cycles. You will receive the original once an agreement number has been assigned.
  • The Waiver of Liability form must be signed by every person participating in the cleanup event. Minors must have an adult sign the Waiver of Liability on their behalf. This form should be forwarded to the Public Works Department immediately after each and every cleanup event.
  • You must notify the Public Works Department at least two weeks prior to scheduling a cleanup. Groups that give the proper notification will have first priority for use of the cleanup equipment.
  • Equipment can be picked up from the Neal Road Recycling & Waste Facility (1023 Neal Road, Paradise) on the Thursday or Friday prior to the cleanup event, and must be returned no later than the following Tuesday. We provide the following equipment:
    • Trash grabbers
    • High visibility safety vests
    • Orange plastic bags
    • “Road Work” signs
    • Hard hats
  • Place the plastic bags and any large items (tires, mattresses, appliances, etc.) along the side of the road in an area that will not obstruct traffic in any way and which our crews can safely access. Public Works crews will retrieve the bags and other items the following week. Please note that certain times of the year it is extremely busy for our crews, but they will get the bags picked up as soon as they can or the Adopt-a-Highway Coordinator will make arrangements for the pickup.
  • If you have any questions, please contact the Butte County Public Works Department - Solid Waste Division at 530.693.0172, or
