Public Health

The mission of the Butte County Public Health Department (BCPHD) is to protect the public through promoting individual, community, and environmental health.

Meet Ann Dickman, a Butte County Public Health Nursing Supervisor and Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Director who has been with the County for 20 years.

Get to know Ann.

Ann is a Nursing Supervisor for the Public Health Department. Ann moved to Chico in the early seventies to attend Chico State. She fell in love with Butte County and the great sense of community that she experienced. As a nursing student, she wasn’t introduced to Public Health until her final year of school. While much of her nursing education focused on single patient care, Public Health focused on the health of the entire community – the very community that she loved. Over her many years with Public Health, Ann has worked on community related projects that enhance the safety and daily health of many children and families, specifically the Safe Routes to School Program. This program works to improve safety by coordinating resources to build sidewalks, bicycle paths and pedestrian friendly infrastructure near schools and beyond.

Ann also supervises the Maternal Child Adolescent Health Program and the Child Passenger Safety Program, which provides low-cost car seats, car seat fittings and car seat education to the public. Other areas of professional focus include working to increase community awareness and services for women suffering from perinatal mood and anxiety disorder and chairing the Butte Glenn Perinatal Council. When she’s not working to help young mothers and children, she looks forward to time spent with her husband, children and grandchildren. “Grandchildren are the real treat,” says Ann. Ann also has a love for the outdoors, especially for her garden. She also enjoys camping, kayaking, and playing cards with friends.
