Butte County Fire Department is the largest fire department north of Sacramento, California to Eugene, Oregon. We are a combination of career and citizen volunteer firefighters.

Our Mission: "To provide professional services to protect lives, property, and environment to those residing, working or traveling with in the unincorporated areas of Butte County, the cities of Biggs and Gridley and the Town of Paradise."

Battalion Chief Garrett Needles

My start in the fire service began in 1993 with Butte County Fire Department North Chico Volunteer Company 42.  Also in 1993 I worked for the USFS on a Mendocino OC hand crew based out of Willows.  I began my career with CDF in the Lassen Modoc Unit as a seasonal firefighter in 1994.  I worked at the Bieber Station for two seasons before being offered a job in the Butte unit at the Forest Ranch Station in 1996.  I moved into a 9 month position at the Biggs Station #73 in late of 1996 and stayed in Battalion 7 moving around between Palermo, Biggs and Gridley Station before becoming a permanent Firefighter II in 2000 at the Gridley Station.  I worked as a LT engineer in Battalion 2 and Battalion 7 before obtaining permanent engineer status in 2002, assigned to Station 35 in Battalion 1.  I promoted to permanent captain in the summer of 2008 and was assigned to the upper ridge station #33 before taking an assignment in the Butte Units training Bureau as the volunteer training coordinator.  In January of 2015 I promoted to LT Battalion Chief within the training bureau. In January 2017 I became the supervising Battalion Chief for Battalion 2 which covers the Communities of Cohasset, Butte Meadows and Forest Ranch.   I am responsible for the supervision of three CAL FIRE stations and its employees along with the two assigned volunteer companies.   During my shift I am assigned Battalion coverage which covers my assigned area along with Battalion 4, the Chico Battalion.  I respond to “All Risk” incidents to provide support, supervision and incident command when needed.

I manage the units Hired Equipment program and the Every 15 minute program in our local area.  I organize the annual awards banquet for career staff, volunteer firefighters and support staff.  I am an active member of the Butte County Training Officers Association where I currently hold the position of Vice President and Treasurer.   I am responsible for the annual MOU vacation process for the unit.  From the firefighters to Captains, I ensure a fair process is followed to allow adequate time off for unit personnel.  Lastly, I am the committee chair for the unit’s apparatus equipment standards committee.
