Butte County Fire Department is the largest fire department north of Sacramento, California to Eugene, Oregon. We are a combination of career and citizen volunteer firefighters.

Our Mission: "To provide professional services to protect lives, property, and environment to those residing, working or traveling with in the unincorporated areas of Butte County, the cities of Biggs and Gridley and the Town of Paradise."

Chris Boyd, Fire Protection Planning Captain

I attended college at Rancho Santiago in Southern California, and moved to Chico to attend Butte College. I enrolled at the Butte College Fire Academy, where I was a cadet Firefighter at the Jarbo Gap Station. In 1996 I was hired as a seasonal Firefighter with CAL Fire, working to the ranks of Limited Term Engineer in 2002, Firefighter II in 2003, Engineer in 2007 and Captain in 2016. The majority of my career has been in Butte, but I have also spent time in Riverside as a Reserve Firefighter, and Siskiyou as a Limited Term Captain.

While in the Butte Unit I’ve worked Schedule A and Schedule B, most recently at the Durham Station. While assigned to Durham I worked as a SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) technician and as part of the SCBA program. One of my biggest accomplishments was the conversion of the departments 3000 psi SCBA’s to 4500 psi, which were placed in service this year. Currently I work in the Prevention Bureau, in the Fire Protection Planning position. My responsibilities include "Firesafe" regulations in SRA and LRA lands; evaluating planned unit developments, divisions of land and site approvals including commercial and industrial projects regarding fire protection requirements; reviewing all conditional use permits and variance requests for Fire Department regulation compliance.
