Mission Statement

The mission of the Victim Assistance Bureau (VAB) is to reduce the trauma and frustration experienced by victims, witnesses and family members affected by crime through the provision of quality services, information, and support.  Trained and experienced Victim Advocates can assist with a variety of services to aid in minimizing the trauma.

Program Services:

California Victim Compensation Board - CalVCB

CalVCB Application – Advocates can assist victims in applying for services available through the California Victim Compensation Board. These services include mental health treatment, medical/dental treatment, relocation expenses, loss of wages, crime scene clean-up, home security, and funeral/burial for eligible victims/derivative victims. CalVCB can provide compensation for these services to eligible victims who suffer injury or threat of physical injury as a direct result of a violent crime. You may apply online: https://online.victims.ca.gov/

Applications submitted through the Butte County District Attorney’s Victim Assistance Bureau are processed more quickly.  Please call 530-538-7340, and an advocate will assist you.

Resource and Referral

VAB can provide information about social service agencies, therapists and others who can assist victims and their families.

Orientation to the Criminal Justice System/Case Status

VAB can provide information about the status of the case and victims' rights under Marsy's Law. Advocates assist in explaining the criminal justice system as it relates to the victim and their family, and provide information regarding locations, procedures and functioning of the local criminal justice system.

If the defendant is currently in custody at the Butte County Jail, please contact Victim Information & Notification Everyday, “VINE”, at 877-411-5588 or www.vinelink.com to receive updates of offender custody status.

Court Support and Escort

Upon request, an advocate is available to attend court with the victim/family members to provide support and information.

Victim Impact Statement

Victim Advocates can provide an outline and sample impact statements for victims and their families. The impact statement is submitted prior to sentencing and provides the judge with valuable insight into how the crime has impacted the victim and their family. The Advocate helps guide the victim to ensure his or her voice is heard.

Restitution Assistance

In California, victims have a constitutional right to restitution. Victims of crime have the right to request the defendant pay restitution for any economic losses incurred as a direct result of the crime. Documentation to support the losses can aid the judge in ordering restitution at sentencing. A Victim Advocate can help ensure the restitution request is accurate and submitted properly.
