The mission of the Butte County Library is to provide all individuals, regardless of age, ethnic background, educational or economic level, with free access to ideas, information, and technology.
Paradise Seed Lending Library (PSLL)

What is a seed library & how does it work? Paradise Seed Lending Library Logo

The basic idea is similar to a regular Library, but instead of books we lend seeds. Gardeners "check out" packets of seeds for the varieties of plants & vegetables they wish to grow. Essentially borrowing seeds from the library at planting time. All it takes is a library card. The public library also provides easy access to books and other gardening resources.

We ask for the gardeners to allow a couple of plants to go to seed. At the end of the growing season, the seed produced is harvested & returned to the library. Typically twice the starting amount, to the seed library to continue the cycle. Saving seed helps preserve plant varieties that are better suited to our local growing area.

A seed lending library is a way to build community with fellow gardeners and support people who are new to the world of gardening.

Our mission is to preserve genetic diversity and food sovereignty. To collectively develop locally resilient plants and to offer free access to seeds for growing food, flowers, herbs and native plants.>

Our goal is to expand community education in seed saving, gardening, permaculture, and current issues in agriculture.  As a group we also hope to enhance community building with library materials to meet the town's needs. We want to connect the public with fellow gardeners and enthusiasts to build a valuable relationship between local community groups and the Paradise Branch Library.

A special thanks goes out to all of the companies, groups & people that helped get this project started.>
