Water & Resource Conservation

Butte County's Department of Water and Resource Conservation was formed on July 1, 1999 following many years implementing programs to protect the Butte County water resources.

Our Mission: To manage and conserve water and other resources for the citizens of Butte County.

Emergency Water Conservation Regulations

Because most residents in Butte County use more water outdoors than indoors, reducing the amount of water used outdoors can make the biggest difference in water saving. The California Water Board has instituted Emergency Water Conservation Regulations to promote water conservation statewide.

The following actions are prohibited (except when necessary to address an immediate health or safety need):

  • The application of potable water to any driveway or sidewalk;
  • Using potable water to water outdoor landscapes in a manner that causes runoff to adjacent property, non-irrigated areas, private and public walkways, roadways, parking lots, or structures;
  • Using a hose that dispenses potable water to wash a motor vehicle, unless the hose is fitted with a shut-off nozzle; and
  • Using potable water in a fountain or decorative water feature, unless the water is recirculated. Recycled water is not mandated, but encouraged for fountain use.

Reporting Water Waste

Butte County encourages all residents to comply with the California Water Board temporary water restrictions to conserve water. You may notice individuals, business, or organizations that are not complying with the temporary water restrictions. Here are a few ways to report water waste.
