Sheriff's Office
Sheriff Jerry W. SmithThe Sheriff’s Office serves all the citizens of Butte County by providing a mix of public safety and public service functions. The Sheriff’s Office provides around-the-clock law enforcement service to every region of the county. In addition to 24 hour policing, we offer Butte County citizens a full range of services including, coroner services, civil services, court security and corrections.

The Records Office performs many functions within the Sheriff’s Office, and is responsible for maintaining incident reports, bookings into the jail and reporting statistics to the California Department of Justice. Electronic fingerprinting, known as Live Scan, is also done for background clearances needed for employment or licensing. Applications for various permits and licenses are processed in this office, including concealed weapons permits, alarm permits, solicitor permits, peddler permits, explosive permits or licenses for firearms dealers. The Records Office is also responsible for registering the addresses of sex offenders, narcotics offenders, arson offenders and some gang members.

RENEWING YOUR CCW?  Please be advised that:

In the interest of public safety, the process to renew your CCW has changed.  If your CCW has expired, you will be required to complete another application.  If your permit is nearing expiration, you will be required to review your original and/or most recent application and attest that the information is still accurate or advise us if any changes have occurred.  An updated background check will be performed for all requests for renewal and you will be notified of our decision once the updated background is complete.  If approved you will then proceed to take your CCW class.  Fees will not be collected until you return your course certification and we issue your permit.  The fee for renewing has not changed and remains at $79.00.  In unique situations in which the Sheriff’s Office determines the applicant must start the process over for an initial CCW instead of a renewal CCW, the fee for an initial CCW license would be applicable.

This change is necessary in order to minimize the possibility of someone being issued a renewal CCW when they may no longer be eligible based on such things no longer meeting the residency requirement, a concern with good moral character, negative contacts with law enforcement agencies, etc.  We appreciate your patience and understanding of the need for this change.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Records Bureau at (530) 538-7973.
