The BCSO K9 Unit was established in 1983. We currently have five K9 teams on patrol and one in the jail. Our K-9’s are all Belgian Malinois and have attended an extensive training course. Belgian Malinois are known for being very protective and hardworking. They have approximately 1,400 pounds per square inch bite pressure, can run at speeds up to 30 mph, their life span is between 10-12 years, and their noses are 400 times more sensitive than a human’s. Our K-9’s are all trained in narcotic detection and can identify four different narcotic odors including Methamphetamines/Ecstasy, Cocaine, Heroin, and Marijuana. We also have one K-9 team certified in the identification of explosives. The jail K9 team is for narcotic detection only.
