The Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) announces that the death of Stephon Jones appears to be an unfortunate accident. Autopsy results could not pinpoint the cause of death which is common in circumstances involving significant decomposition. However, circumstantial evidence gathered during the course of this lengthy investigation has allowed the Sheriff’s Office to draw this conclusion.

The autopsy ultimately revealed no sign of trauma to the body which would indicate foul play or suicide. The circumstances surrounding him going missing indicate this was an accidental death.

On 9/9/16, BCSO received a report from California State Parks regarding a fisherman who had located a body in the area of Red Tape Road on Lake Oroville.  BCSO representatives responded to the scene and located the deceased individual face down on the shore. Due to the condition of the body, BCSO representatives were unable to make positive identification. On 9/15/16, the body was positively identified as Stephon Jones through the use of dental records.  Jones was reported missing on 2/10/16.
