On 9/12/16 at 7:42am, The Butte County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call on the 6500 block of Imperial Way in Magalia for a report of a man waving a gun at children at a bus stop. Deputies responded and found the suspect, Richard Cosentino, 63, of Magalia, and detained him. Cosentino was released from custody while deputies located the victim and witnesses and conducted the investigation.

Upon further investigation, deputies learned Cosentino began verbally assaulting a man, who was standing at the bus stop with his son, calling him racial slurs, and said he was going to go get his gun to shoot the victim. Cosentino then went back into his home nearby and came out with something behind his back. The victim left the scene and the kids then got on the bus and left the area. Follow up interviews with eight different students at Paradise High School and Ridgeview High School were conducted.

On 9/13/16 a warrant was issued for Cosentino’s arrest. A search warrant was also executed at his home on Imperial Way in Magalia where deputies located two guns and ammunition. Cosentino was not at the home when the search warrant was executed.

On 9/18/16, deputies arrested Cosentino at his home on charges of PC-422, willfully communicating a threat to another person that would result in great bodily injury or death as well an additional charge PC-422.6(A), which is classified as a hate crime. Cosentino was booked into the Butte County Jail with bail set at $500,000.
