BUTTE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SEES 500% INCREASE IN DROWNING INCIDENTS
OROVILLE, CA, -- Drowning incidents in Butte County have increased significantly this summer, up 500% from recent years. With the summer season still in full effect, Butte County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit & Search and Rescue would like to remind participants of water related activities to be vigilant about water safety by following these tips.
● Please Remember to Wear a Coast Guard Approved Lifejacket -- Failure to wear a personal floatation device increases the risk of drowning and water related tragedies.
● Respect the Force of Water – Water currents can be much stronger than anticipated.
● Respect the Varying Temperatures of Water -- Cold water can cause hypothermia to set in very quickly, and can immobilize even the best swimmers.
● Stay Sober -- Alcohol consumption can impair judgment, balance, and coordination. Staying sober decreases your chances of water related incidents.
● Use Caution- Even the best swimmers can drown.

We are lucky to live in an area that offers so many water related activities to escape the heat. BCSO Marine Unit & Search and Rescue hopes these tips will help to prevent any more water related tragedies this summer.
