Concow, CA- On Monday, December 4, 2017, at approximately 2:58 p.m., Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) deputies were patrolling the area of Big Bend Road in Concow. Deputies noticed a vehicle at a nearby trailer park that was believed to be stolen. A check of the vehicle, a white Toyota Tacoma, confirmed it to be stolen out of Nevada City. The truck was parked in front of a trailer and inside the trailer, deputies located Paul Houk, age 36. Deputies then searched the truck and found a container with suspicious, unknown substances inside. Deputies were concerned that it was an improvised explosive device and requested assistance from the Butte County Inter-Agency Bomb Squad, as well as the CAL FIRE Hazmat Team.
Members of the Butte County Inter-Agency Bomb Squad retrieved the substances and further testing is required to determine exactly what the substances are. Houk was arrested for possession of stolen property, being a felon in possession of ammunition, and an additional charge was added at the Butte County Jail after Houk brought methamphetamine to the jail. A deer carcass was also located inside Houk’s trailer that was illegally poached, so additional charges of poaching and being a felon in possession of a firearm were added by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Houk has been booked into the Butte County Jail with bail set at $45,000.
