Thermalito, CA- On Monday, September 11, 2017, at around 10:00 a.m., the Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) received a call that a Hispanic male, later identified as Ryan Swars, age 27, had entered a home on Mountain Vista Drive in Thermalito, while the homeowner was outside. Swars was unknown to the homeowner. The homeowner then went to a neighbor’s home and called 9-1-1.
When BCSO deputies responded, they observed Swars through a window armed with a knife. Upon seeing the deputies, Swars made an aggressive movement with the knife towards the deputies, who were outside of the residence. Swars was also in possession of the homeowner’s three rifles and a shotgun, which he found after entering the home.
The BCSO SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to the scene. As the SWAT Team was approaching the home, Swars peacefully surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. Swars is being booked into the Butte County Jail on charges of felony vandalism, a misdemeanor charge of being under the influence of a controlled substance, and trespassing. Peaceful resolutions are always the goal of the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, and we were pleased with the outcome today.
