Illegal Dumping

Solid Waste Division of the Butte County Public Works Department

Illegal dumping has been a problem in Butte County for numerous years, and the Public Works Department has moved into a position of being proactive with the adoption of Chapter 49 of the Code of Butte County.

The Ordinance created a “Cradle to the Grave” determination for solid waste. “It’s your trash and your responsible to see that it is legally disposed of. Illegal dumping became a Misdemeanor Offense, and the County established  an Administrative Order / Hearing process to minimize the impact on the courts. Fines of $100 / $200 / $300 we implements and Hearing Officer/Appeal process was put into place.

2006 saw a 78% reduction in the number of illegal dumping sites in the County. The program appears to be very successful.
