Solid Waste Division - Adopt-a-Highway Program

What is the Adopt-a-Highway Program ?

The The ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Program allows organizations to help keep Butte County's roads (not just highways) clean and safe. Become a sponsor today!

How the program works:
Procedures can also be downloaded here.

    1. Give each applicant an application packet which should include the following:
      1. Interest Letter
      2. ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Application
      3. Waiver of Liability
      4. ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Sign design form
      5. Litter Pickup Conditions Sheet
      6. Safety Requirements

    2. Instruct the applicant to read the material and fill out the ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Application. The ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Application must be turned in at least two weeks prior to the initial cleanup event. The ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Application is good for two years so if this is not the group’s initial application, it is not necessary that they fill out an ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Application, unless their application has lapsed (check binder).
    3. Completed applications shall be returned to Scot Johnson.
    4. Make 3 copies of the completed ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Application. Keep one for the binder, give one to Scot Johnson, send one to Mark Jones in the sign shop with a copy of the ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY sign design form, and give one to the appropriate Road Foreman. The applicant gets the original once an Agreement number has been assigned by Scot Johnson.
    5. Point out that the Waiver of Liability must be signed by every person participating in the cleanup event. Minors must have an adult sign the Waiver of Liability on their behalf. This form should be forwarded to the Public Works Department immediately after each and every cleanup event.
    6. Instruct applicants that they must notify the Public Works Department at least two weeks prior to scheduling a cleanup. Groups that give the proper notification will have first priority for use of the cleanup equipment.
    7. Equipment can be picked up the Thursday or Friday prior to the cleanup event and must be returned no later than the following Tuesday. We provide the following equipment:
      1. Trash Grabbers
      1. Orange safety vests
      2. Orange plastic bags
      3. “Road Work” signs
      4. Hard hats, upon request
    8. Groups should be instructed to place the plastic bags and any large items (tires, mattresses, appliances, etc.) along the side of the road in an area that will not obstruct traffic in any way and which our crews can safely access.
    9. Public Works crews will retrieve the bags and other items the following week. Make sure to leave a memo for the appropriate road foreman to let him know the location of the cleanup. Inform participants that certain times of the year it is extremely busy for our crews but they will get the bags picked up as soon as they can or the ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY Coordinator will make arrangements for the pickup.
