Butte County's Storm Water Management Program is a requirement of Phase II of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Program as ordered by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The County's Program was required by federal law to be fully implemented by July 1, 2008 and Water Quality Order No. 2013-0001-DWQ required full compliance by 2018. Currently Butte County's Municipal Storm Water Management Permit covers the urbanized area around the City of Chico.
