Butte County Public Health Department Recognizes National Public Health Week 2012
Today, we know that nearly 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese; 46 million people don’t have health insurance; almost 900,000 people die deaths that can be prevented each year; and for the first time, American children may live shorter lives than their parents. Even though the statistics are discouraging, every day is a chance to improve the health of our community.
Catching and preventing these illnesses and incidents before they develop is the key to improving our nation’s health. There are so many small steps we can take to begin leading healthier lives; sometimes it just takes a little motivation. Even what may seem like the smallest actions—such as going for a 30-minute walk most days of the week, purchasing produce from your local farmer’s market, e-mailing a friend a healthy recipe, or wearing a helmet when riding a bike-- can have a big impact when they are spread throughout an entire family or community.
In recognition of National Public Health Week, April 2-8th, the Butte County Public Health Department invites Butte County citizens to join forces in supporting this year's theme of, "A Healthier America Begins TODAY: Join the Movement!" Please stay posted throughout the month of April for helpful tips from our public health educators, nurses, and nutritionists about how you can make this spring/summer season healthier and safer—in your families, neighborhoods, workplaces and schools. A healthier Butte County begins with you.
