Q. How do I quit smoking on my own? I don’t want a program.

A. Quitting smoking is a very difficult task but these simple tips can help you to quit. List your reasons why you want to quit smoking. Set a quit date so you can prepare yourself. Get rid of all smoking related items such as lighters, ashtrays, and of course your cigarettes. Avoid situations that may trigger you to smoke. For example if your friends smoke it will be a lot easier if you ask them not to smoke around you. If every time you finish a meal you want to smoke, change your habit by taking a walk instead. If you always smoke while you drive, take the bus, car pool with a non-smoker, or walk to work. To manage withdrawal, exercise everyday, keep healthy snacks handy, drink 6-8 classes of water everyday, try chewing sugarless gum, develop new hobbies, and ask friends and family to support you in your efforts. Remember the urge will pass. The first two weeks will be very difficult but it will get easier. Most of all remember, “You Can Do It!”

Q. If I stop smoking, will I gain weight?

A. The average person gains about five pounds after quitting smoking (over a two-year period). There are ways to reduce or even eliminate weight gain. One thing to remember is that you cannot substitute food for cigarettes. If you are craving a cigarette and need to snack, try eating something healthy like carrot sticks or chew on some sugarless gum. Do not skip meals because getting overly hungry could increase your craving for a cigarette. Instead, eat regularly choosing healthy meals, and dring plenty of water. One of the best things you can do to reduce or eliminate weight gain is to incorporate more exercise into your daily life.
