Public Health

The mission of the Butte County Public Health Department (BCPHD) is to protect the public through promoting individual, community, and environmental health. This is achieved by providing a wide range of services in more than 50 programs including: women and children’s health, communicable and infectious diseases, planning for and responding to disasters, healthy and safe animals, and protecting natural resources while improving the environment.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally-funded program which provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support and vouchers for approximately $60 of healthy foods per month to thousands of Butte County pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women and to infants and children up through age five.  Many low to moderate income families, including working and migrant families are eligible for the healthy foods, nutrition services and referrals that WIC offers.

Children and prenatal nutrition, infant feeding dental health, breastfeeding, baby behavior, and growth and development are just some of the parent education classes taught by trained WIC staff in the Oroville and Chico offices.

WIC BuildingWIC services include:

  • Nutrition education
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Child safety information
  • Child development
  • Monthly food vouchers
