Butte County is located in northern California. Its southern border is approximately 55 miles north of the State’s capital in Sacramento. One of the original twenty-seven California counties, it now covers approximately 1,676 square miles with a population of approximately 204,000 citizens. The county is situated on the eastern side of the Sacramento Valley, extending from the Sacramento River, on its western border, east into the foothills and western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The county has five urban areas around the cities of Biggs, Chico, Gridley, Oroville, and Paradise. With many small rural communities that occupy a diverse landscape which encompasses range lands, lakes, rivers, foothills, prime agricultural lands, forests, and rugged mountains and canyons.
