The Welfare Fraud Unit (WFU) provides some Early Fraud investigation and some on-going case investigation to the Butte County Department of Employment and Social Services (DESS). WFU consists of three (3) sworn investigators with two (2) assigned to conduct Early Fraud investigations. If fraud is found in the application process, the findings are provided to DESS for appropriate handling, and may be submitted for prosecution for the crime of perjury.


- Investigate referrals of criminal conduct per Welfare and Institutions Code section 10980
- Investigate referrals of criminal conduct per various Penal Code sections
- Conduct early fraud investigations of applicant information during the intake process
- Conduct homeless assistance investigations of all temporary and permanent housing applications
- Serve outstanding arrest warrants on welfare fraud cases
- Provide courtroom testimony
