Welcome to the Butte County Clerk of the Board web site. Butte County was among California's original 27 counties. Created in 1850, the County's first governing board convened on June 5, 1854, and at the time was known as the Court of Sessions. The Court of Sessions was headed by a judge and considered civil actions and general business of the County. On May 7, 1855, the first Board of Supervisors meeting was convened and our current form of governing body was created with the election of the first Board of Supervisors' Chair, R.B. Moore. Butte County derives its name from the Marysville or Sutter Buttes, which lay within the County boundaries at the time of its creation. Butte County currently comprises 1,677 square miles approximately 60 miles north of Sacramento. A predominantly agricultural county, Butte County contains the five incorporated cities or towns of Biggs, Chico, Gridley, Oroville and Paradise, and as of the 2000 census, has a population of 203,171. The County Board of Supervisors is the governing body for the County and special districts within the County. It exercises the legislative, administrative, and appellate powers prescribed to it by the California State Constitution and Statutes, as well as the Butte County Charter. On this site you will find current and past agendas, current and past minutes, supervisor and district information, board meeting information, assessment appeals information, the County Code, the appointments registry ( a listing of county boards commissions and committees), a county department head listing, the Chico Urban Area Nitrate Compliance Plan, and links to sites of possible interest.
The Butte County Board of Supervisors join with the rest of America in their shock and sadness resulting from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. In a resolution adopted September 25, 2001, the Board officially condemned the terrorist acts, stated its support for the ongoing efforts and leadership of the President of the United States, and stated its resolve to continue to work with the Governor on security measures, and to support his commitment to ensure our Golden State remains a state of freedom, peace and prosperity. Those whose lives were lost shall always be remembered in our hearts, and their families are remembered in our prayers. Through this time the Board is committed to not allowing terrorist acts to dampen the spirit and resolve of the United States and all its citizens.
