The burning of rice straw residue has been the most economically viable method of disposal since the beginning of the rice industry in California. Removing straw is important because left otherwise it is the source of several problems such as:
disease
- pests
- soil preparation
- delayed planting
However, the Rice Straw Burning Reduction Act will ultimately require growers to find alternative methods of straw management.
