Raising the water level inhibits watergrass (Echinochloa sp.) seedlings from breaking the water surface, and therefore killing the weed.

However, deep-water resistance may occur within certain populations of watergrass. The BIFS in Rice project is currently investigating this phenomenon via experimentation with varying water levels with several collected watergrass populations.
