Join Butte County Library in reading the 2008-09 Book In Common: Three Cups of Tea

The Butte County Library is excited to partner with California State University - Chico, Butte College, Chico Unified School District, Enloe Hospital, Lyon's Books, the Chico Enterprise-Record, and local citizens in book clubs around our County in adopting Greg Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea as the 2008-09 community-wide book-in-common.

Book in Common programs across the country have been shown to enhance community and foster dialogue on important social, political and personal questions. The Library sees the Book in Common as an opportunity to promote the values of reading, reflection and action in support of building a sense of community, strengthening literacy and advancing the common good.

The website for the book Three Cups of Tea summarizes the story as follows:

One School at a Time Greg Mortenson, and acclaimed journalist David Oliver Relin, recount the unlikely journey that led Mortenson from a failed attempt to climb Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, to successfully building schools in some of the most remote regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan. By replacing guns with pencils, rhetoric with reading, Mortenson combines his unique background with his intimate knowledge of the third-world to fight terrorism with books, not bombs, and successfully bring education and hope to remote villages in central
AsiaTHREE CUPS OF TEA is at once an unforgettable adventure and the inspiring true story of how one man really is changing the world—one school at a time."
