Established in 1985, Butte County Library Literacy Services provides a variety of services for adults, families and children in our community
Adult Reading Program
Adults interested in improving their basic reading and writing skills are matched one-on-one with trained volunteer tutors in our community. Services are free and instruction is goal-directed and student-centered. Pairs typically meet in their local library once or twice a week for an hour to an hour and a half each meeting. Volunteers are always welcome. For information, please contact the office.
Families For Literacy
Recognizing that a child’s first and most important teacher is his/her parent, this service is for adult learners working with a tutor who have children five years of age or younger. Family oriented materials such as children’s literature and parenting materials are incorporated into the tutoring lessons. Other activities such as special story times for the whole family and book giveaways to develop home libraries are also components of this important program designed to help families discover the joy of reading and learning together.
Club ELLI (English Language Literacy Intensive)
This program provides additional support to elementary school English language learners struggling to improve their English literacy skills by providing engaging and fun language enrichment activities in a supportive environment. Field trips to learn more about and explore their community, whole family involvement, and book giveaways are also key to the success of this service.
The Literacy Coach
This state-of-the-art 36’ custom-built vehicle travels throughout the county to preschools, low income housing complexes and other similar sites to bring services to children and their parents or caregivers who may not otherwise have access to the wonders of the library due to geographic, economic or language barriers. Story times, parent meetings, workshops, and computer and teacher trainings are just some of the activities presented aboard the Literacy Coach. The Literacy Coach is the result of a start up grant from Butte County’s First 5 Children and Families Commission.
Partners and Learners (PAL)
The exciting PAL program serves “at-risk” K-6th grade students in the Oroville/Palermo area. Kids are matched one-on-one with volunteer tutors and meet regularly to work on reading, writing, spelling, homework, using the library and other topics that encourage learning. Literacy Coach services have also been expanded to provide after school tutoring/homework help, and language rich activities at partner locations in this community. The launch of this program was made possible through a Library Services and Technology Act grant.
Early Learning with Families @ your Library (ELF)
In collaboration with the Library’s Children’s Services, this program is aimed especially for our community’s youngest members, those under three years! Activities include Library Playtimes at the Chico and Oroville branches—children visit the Library with a favorite adult to enjoy activities developed just for them! Valley Oak Children’s Services generously shares their wonderful resources and a casual, friendly atmosphere is provided as parents/caregivers have a chance to talk with guest specialists such as nutritionists and speech therapists. Babies Love Books, for little ones under 18 months, are delightful lapsits at the Chico Branch that not only introduce some wonderful books to share with baby, but also encourages interaction and play between baby and their caregivers—learning and fun for all at the Library!
