Can We Appeal The Value?
  2009/2010 MESSAGE

As the 2009-2010 Secured Property Tax bills have been mailed, our department has been inundated with calls regarding the decline in property values and other value-related issues. To ensure that these questions and issues are addressed as quickly as possible, we would like to remind you that you may also contact the Assessor’s Office via e-mail through the link provided below. Please be certain to include your assessment number so that we can refer your question or concern to the appropriate party. assessorsoffice@buttecounty.net

Please be aware that adjustments made due to a request for review (Request for Review Form (PDF)) due to a decline in value (Prop. 8 reviews) will not be made to the current property tax bill. Prop. 8 adjustments will be enrolled for the future tax roll (2010-2011). In order for a value reduction to affect the current property tax bill, an appeal must be filed with the appeals board no later than November 30, 2009. You may contact the appeals board by calling the Assessment Appeals Board at (530) 538-7371 or visit Clerk of the Board website.

  ASSESSMENT APPEALS

If there is a difference of opinion over new base year value of a property, the owner should contact the Assessor's Office for a review. If the disagreement continues, the property owner has the right to file an appeal. Butte County has a three-member Assessment Appeal Board appointed by the Board of Supervisors, and a Hearing Officer. They consider all evidence presented by the property owner and by the Assessor's staff at a formal hearing. The Appeals Board, or the Hearing Officer, determine the assessment for the property in question.

Assessment Appeal Filing Periods are as follows:

  • Supplemental Assessment - no later than 60 days after the date on which the assessee was notified by Supplemental Assessment Notice.
  • Regular Assessment - July 2 through November 30.

Appeals are filed with the Clerk of the Board of Supervisors in Oroville.
